Do No Harm

Around 5% of national greenhouse gas emissions in Norway, come from the health sector, like most high-income countries across the world (British Medical Journal, 2020). The world faces unprecedented challenges to meet the Paris Agreement and the healthcare system needs to do its part too. In October 2020, the National Health Service (NHS) in England became the first country in the world to release a Net Zero healthcare strategy - it can be done (NHS, 2020). The ‘Decarbonising Healthcare’ project aims to build a coalition of researchers, policy makers, clinicians and leaders in the healthcare system to map out existing climate work in the Norwegian health sector and ultimately develop a comprehensive strategy to decarbonize Norwegian healthcare.

Activities

1. Roundtable discussions involving regional and national policy makers, healthcare workers, researchers, and non-governmental organisations.

2. Information gathering through reviewing the academic literature, interviews and questionnaires to identify existing work in Norway and best practice case studies from overseas.

3. Produce a report summarising the best available evidence on carbon emissions from the health sector, current activities in Norway and pathways to ‘net zero healthcare.
